SANDAKAN: The Sandakan District Health Office has issued a directive to close the Sim-Sim Public Market here, famous for its grilled fish stalls, since Tuesday following cases of food poisoning.
Sandakan District Health Officer, Dr Johari Awang Besar said they had received information from the Emergency and Trauma Department of the Duchess of Kent Hospital, on Monday, about six food poisoning cases.
Prior to that, he said all the patients reported having a meal of grilled fish at a stall in the market.
"Three of the patients have been admitted for further treatment, while three others were treated as outpatients," he told reporters after inspecting the Sim-Sim Public Market here yesterday.
He said the directive to close the market was issued under Section 18 (1), paragraph (d) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases, 1998.
Johari said there was no stipulation until when the market would be closed and it depends on when the cleaning and disinfection of the premises is completed by the owner of the premises. — Bernama
