33 made homeless as fire destroys double-storey house

SIBU: Thirty-three tenants were left with the clothes on their backs after fire destroyed their two-storey house at Jalan Tiong Hua here yesterday.
The blaze occurred at around 4pm when the Chinese community in the town were returning home to prepare for the Chap Goh Meh celebration.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operation centre in a statement said, six rented rooms on the first floor were razed but no one was injured.
According to the statement, five engines and 21 firefighters from the Sibu and Sungai Merah Fire Stations were rushed to the scene soon after they were alerted of fire at 4.02pm.
The cause of fire was being investigated, it added. — Bernama
