Chong Wei survives scare before advancing to All-England quarter-final

    KUALA LUMPUR: National badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei was made to work hard before confirming his spot in the quarter-finals of the All England Badminton Championship in Birmingham, Thursday.
    The defending champion easily won the first set 21-6 against South Korean Lee Dong Keun. However, he lost the second set 13-21, and won the third with a close margin of 21-18, according to official website, bwf.tournamentsoftware.com.
    Chong Wei now faces his longtime rival Lin Dan of China, who dismissed Wang Tze Wei from Taiwan, 21-13, 23-21 in another quarter-final action.
    For the record, Chong Wei has won the prestigious tournament four times, namely in 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2017, while Lin Dan has won it five times, in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2012, and 2016.
    Meanwhile, mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying ended their run in the second round against China's Zhang Nan-Li Yinhui, despite giving their opponents a good fight. They lost 22-24, 20-22.
    Two men's doubles pairs, namely Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, as well as women's singles player Goh Jin Wei will be in action early today Malaysian time. — Bernama
