PETALING JAYA: Facing a veteran means facing the facts on what someone did for all the years working for the people of the constituency, Pakatan Harapan's Lembah Pantai candidate Fahmi Fadzil said today.
Fahmi said he understood the fact that he is facing a veteran Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Seri Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin but he viewed that as a challenge.
"The programmes initiated by Raja Nong Chik might make him look popular. But having said that, this is just a challenge. The people in the caretaker government have their roles. So when they execute their job under a certain system like Goods and Services Tax (GST), Raja Nong Chik has to support GST," he said when met at the Keadilan headquarters here today.
Fahmi said if the people were satisfied with systems such as GST, they could choose Raja Nong Chik.
When asked about Raja Nong Chik's claim that the current opposition candidate would leave the constituency for another seat one day, Fahmi said he was happy with PKR's policy which was to promote youth candidates to be part of the nation-building process.
"Our (PKR youth) intention is to serve the people and that is our utmost responsibility. It is not about youth candidate alone, but to have a group of like-minded people who are committed to making a change in the country into a reality," he said.
"Being chosen as a youth candidate should not be seen solely as an honour, but more importantly, as a heavy responsibility that must be fulfilled."
Fahmi also has slammed Raja Nong Chik, questioning his tenure as Federal Territory minister from 2009 to 2012.
"He was the minister between 2009 and 2012 but what has he done to the KL City Plan 2020? Lots of problems we face today not only in Lembah Pantai but in KL we can trace back to his time. I think he should be called into account for the dereliction of duty of not gazetting the KL city plan 2020," he said.
Fahmi is set to take on Raja Nong Chik and Fauzi Abu Bakar of PAS in a three-cornered fight.
In the last general election, Nurul Izzah Anwar defeated Raja Nong Chik and independent candidate Rusli Baba by 1,847 votes.
