KUALA LUMPUR: A factory operator was fined RM40,000 by the sessions court after pleading guilty to five counts of keeping wildlife.
Intan Mazura Mohd Mokhtar (pix), 36, made the plea in the presence of judge Harmi Thamri Mohamad @ Shaharudin after all the charges were read out to her.
Harmi Thamri said the sentence should serve as a lesson to the accused and as a deterrent to the society as wildlife should be protected.
On the first and second counts, Intan was charged with keeping two male and one female Asian Palm civet, which is an offence under the first schedule of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.
On the third and fourth counts, she was accused of keeping one male and six female Dusky Leaf monkeys, which are protected species under the first schedule of the Act, without a licence.
She allegedly committed the offences at her house in Jalan Ampang Kiri, No 6, Desa Pasifik here, at 12.30pm on March 28.
The charge, under Section 60 (1) (a) of the Act for keeping the male species, carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, or a jail term of not more than two years, or both.
The charge, under Section 62 of the same Act for keeping the female species, carries a maximum fine of RM100,000, or a jail term of not more than five years, or both.
