KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territories Ministry has assured Kuala Lumpur residents of a viable living environment.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said this in respond to The Save Kuala Lumpur (SKL) coalition's statement that it is considering court action against Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) if the latter ignores SKL's call to gazette the KL City Plan 2020.
"We are looking at the KL City Plan 2020. I didn't want to gazette it because the Plan was introduced in 2008," Tengku Adnan said after launching the Voluntarism in Community Engagement (VOICE) programme at Jalan Tun HS Lee here today.
"Time has taken over events, so I'm looking at it. Don't worry, DBKL will provide KL residents a very good and conducive city to live."
Last week, SKL has met with DBKL executive director for planning Datuk Mohd Najib Mohd to have a better understanding on the Federal Territories Act 1982, KL Structure Plan 2020, KL local plan and other DBKL planning guidelines.
The coalition chairman Tan Sri Dr Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman said they are disappointed with DBKL for not wanting to gazette the plan.
He said the KL Structure Plan 2020 has to be gazetted as there's never been a local plan for the development of the city.
Aziz said the absence of a gazetted local plan has resulted in an oversupply of high-end residential and office buildings that do not reflect the residents' needs.
He added that it will also lead to various other problems such as no transparency in approvals for changes in land use and residents would be left in the dark regarding the outcomes of their objection hearings.
Currently DBKL is using the guideline in the KL City Plan 2020 for its development.
Last year, KL mayor Tan Sri Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said that it was pointless to gazette the draft KL City Plan 2020 as it is going to expire in three years.
Amin Nordin said a new blueprint will be drawn up for the city's development until the year 2050.
