Hugo Boss Asia Art finalists to go on show in Shanghai

    LATE this month, works by the four finalists in the running for the Hugo Boss Asia Art Award will go on display at Shanghai's Rockbund Art Museum. Ahead of the exhibition, get to know these four emerging Asian artists and their body of work.
    Established in 2013, the Hugo Boss Asia Art Award is a biannual contemporary art prize that recognizes emerging talents in Greater China and Southeast Asia.
    The winner of the 2017 award will be announced in November.
    In the meantime, the Rockbund Art Museum will open its exhibition spotlighting this year's four finalists. From October 27 through January 7, the show will feature both existing and newly commissioned works by Chinese artists Li Ming, Tao Hui and Yu Ji, and Singaporean artist Robert Zhao Renhui.

    Li Ming was born in 1986 in Yuanjiang, Hunan Province and now lives and works in Hangzhou. He has been featured in recent solo presentations in Beijing and Shanghai as well as group presentations in Switzerland, Shanghai, Istanbul, Berlin and at the Busan Biennale.
    Video plays an important role in Li Meng's work. For his 2015 solo exhibition "New Directions" at the Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, he created a site-specific video installation titled "MEIWE."     Tao Hui Was born in Yunyang, Chongqing Province in 1983 and now lives and works in Beijing, creating works of moving images and video installations. In 2015 he featured in solo exhibitions in Beijing and Shanghai; since then his work has appeared in group shows in Berlin, Hong Kong, Paris and Istanbul.

    Yu Ji was born in 1985 in Shanghai, where she now lives. She creates diverse works with a focus on sculpture and installations along with performance and videos. She has been the subject of recent solo exhibitions in Beijing and Taipei and her work has been shown at Paris's Palais de Tokyo.

    Robert Zhao Renhui was born in 1983 in Singapore. He focuses on photography with a multi-discliplinary approach, presenting images along with documents and objects. In addition to solo exhibitions in Singapore, Shanghai, Milan, Vienna and San Francisco, he has had work featured in the Singapore and Moscow biennials.
