PETALING JAYA: A jobless man broke down at the Magistrate's Court here today after being sentenced to four days jail and fined RM1,000 for stealing various food items at a hypermarket, three days ago.
Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir ordered Mohammad Nazrul Khairi Mohammad Badri, 31, who pleaded guilty, to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on Dec 2 and an additional one month's jail if he defaulted on the fine.
The accused had stolen among others onions, bottled water and chocolate altogether valued at RM285.78 at the AEON Hypermarket at Sunway Pyramid here at 4.40pm on Dec 2.
He was caught by staff of the hypermarket when he tried to leave without paying for the items, which were hidden in his sling bag.
In mitigation, he asked for a lenient sentence saying he had to steal because he had no money and had spent four days on remand.
