MALACCA: Police have detained an employee of the Malacca Islamic Religious Department to assist investigations into the break-in at JAIM’s office and missing of Peperiksaan Ujian Penilaian Kelas KAFA (UPKK) examination papers yesterday.
Malacca CID chief, ACP Kamaluddin Kassim said the 37-year-old man was detained at a house in Taman Bukit Katil Kenari, Bukit Katil here at 2.30am today.
During the raid, police recovered six plastic packets containing the stolen papers and a screwdriver believed to have been used to break into the office, he told reporters here.
Kamaluddin said another JAIM employee found the office had been broken into and after an audit found the papers to be missing.
JAIM director Md Azhan Samat, meanwhile, said the papers were received from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) on Sept 14 and were supposed to be distributed to the respective schools yesterday.
He said the office did not have a CCTV system and that they were leaving it to the police to investigate the matter.
He added that the examination from Oct 2-5 would not be affected because JAKIM had alternative papers for the subjects concerned.
Meanwhile, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron ordered that “ no stone be left unturned” in the investigations so that the culprits could be brought to book.
“An incident like this tarnishes the image of Islam. We want religious people to be role models not thieves,” he said. — Bernama
