PETALING JAYA: While walking through a shopping mall a man was seemingly splashed at random with a lotion, apparently from an uknown source. Disgusted, he headed to the nearest toilet to clean the mess.
It was a big mistake as it turned out to be a ploy that was apparently planned by a group of foreign thieves.
The victim, identified as Daniel Muk, lost his backpack containing cash, a portable computer and other valuables in the blink of an eye as he washed up at a toilet in the Sunway Pyramid shopping mall at about 5pm on Friday.
The victim took his misadventure to Facebook on Saturday, where he related that he had gone to the mall to buy foreign currency because he had plans to travel sometime soon.
After visiting a moneychanger, he placed the cash into his backpack, before deciding to walkabout and run errands at the mall.
"While walking, I felt a slob of cream smothered all over my back on my right side. The cream was white and stained my shirt, jeans, backpack and even on my arm."
The victim said he headed straight to the nearest toilet to wash up. There, he wiped off the cream which he realised was some sort of lotion. As he was cleaning up, he removed his bag and placed it on the floor.
While cleaning, a foreign man approached and offered to help him clean up. Despite turning down the request, the foreigner insisted on helping him and grabbed a tissue to do so.
As the foreigner wiped off the lotion, the victim noticed two other men dashing out of the toilet with his backpack. He quickly gave chase, but lost the thieves and decided to return to the toilet to find the man who had "helped" him, but he was gone too.
He reported the case to the mall's security personnel, who took him to the close-circuit camera (CCTV) room, but none of the events were caught in the recordings.
"Thinking about this just frustrates me because I got played right into their hands despite noticing the strange signs all along." he said.
He advised people to be extra careful when alone in public.
Subang Jaya police chief ACP Mohammad Azlin Sadari who confirmed that police received a report from the victim and said that investigations are ongoing.
