PUTRAJAYA: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak was quizzed for about five hours today by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigators over the RM42 million SRC International Sdn Bhd financial scandal.
Najib, who was accompanied by his legal team led by former solicitor-general Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden, arrived at 9.40am.
Five hours later, the former prime minister stepped out of the commission's headquarters at 3.15pm to a group of about 100 newsmen who had been waiting for him since morning.
Najib, who appeared calm but had declined to speak to waiting media personnel on his arrival in the morning, spent a brief moment to respond to queries by reporters before.
"I have given my statement to the MACC in 2015 on SRC and today's session is a continuation of it in greater detail with supporting documents. The recording of my statement was time-consuming and between 10am and 2.15pm with a 30-minute break in between. A large part (statement) of it is completed and the session will be continued again on Thursday. I wish to thank the MACC officers for their professionalism in handling the session." he said before leaving.
Earlier, MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull said in a press conference that the investigations on SRC International was in the final stages and will be concluded after the statements of "one or two" individuals are recorded.
He also said that Najib will not be arrested but will be summoned for future questioning as and when if it is required.
Najib was issued a notice to show up for questioning by the MACC last week had, through his lawyers, agreed to give his cooperation in the probe.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Seri Azam Baki was quoted saying today that Najib could face charges under the MACC Act 2009 if he fails to adhere to the notice.
His new legal team headed by Mohd Yusof replaced an earlier one led by Datuk Harpal Singh Grewal in the eleventh hour last night.
The reasons behind the abrupt switch in his legal team is yet to be known but Harpal who was contacted last night said such change is not 'unusual'.
