IN the spirit of unity, 1,600 individuals comprising the elderly, young, schoolchildren, veterans, physically-disadvantaged, corporate teams and international runners, participated in the Run For National Unity (RFNU) event at Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur.
The run, which was co-organised by HELP University and Redberry, comprised 13 categories with distances of 5,7 and 10km routes. Finisher medals, certs and lucky draws rewarded participants, some who walked away with cash prizes, motorcycles, bicycles, smartphones and smart TVs, hampers and more.
There to flag off the runners was the National Unity and Social Well-Being Minister P. Waythamoorthy. He commended the initiative which involved all segments of Malaysian society and said he plans to take it up with the organisers and other tertiary-level organisations in driving national unity in non-urban areas.
HELP University vice-chancellor Datuk Dr. Paul Chan was also present and happy with the event which he said proved popular, running for the third year and with corporate sponsors in tow - RHB Insurance, OCBC (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Great Eastern, Tokio Marine Insurance and Selangor Properties.
"As the co-organiser, we would like to continue to support as many similar events possible, with a view of nation-building and encouraging bonding among different ethnic groups," he added.
In the same spirit of oneness, crowds were seen exchanging phone numbers, new friendships made and old ones renewed before the event slowly came to an end
