KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened investigations into social activist and former Bar Council president Datuk S. Ambiga as part of usual procedure after she was named as the source of Sarawak Report's claims that PAS' top leader had allegedly received money from the prime minister.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police are yet to call Ambiga to record her statement.
"We have to investigate it anyway," he told reporters after visiting the Special Action Unit (UTK) training centre at Cheras here today.
There were two police reports lodged on this matter.
Mohamad Fuzi said it is a serious issue involving a large amount of money.
Last week, a local portal's article stated that Sarawak Report's Rewcastle Brown made claims in a court filing on Oct 11 that she spoke to Ambiga in July last year about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak's, 1Malaysian Development Bhd (1MDB), and PAS.
Rewcastle-Brown also claimed that her sources, whom she said were reliable, had estimated the amount that had been paid was around RM90 million.
She filed a defence after, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang filed a defamation suit against her. The suit was filed at the Queen's Justice Division High Court in London, United Kingdom on April 21 this year.
Hadi had alleged that he was defamed in a Sarawak Report article titled As Najib denies all over 1MDB let's not forget his many other criminal connections, which was published on Aug 6 last year.
The article implied that money was given in return for PAS' support for Barisan Nasional.
