COX'S BAZAR: While the number of Rohingya refugees is ever increasing at more than 10 refugee camps at Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh with depending on the sympathy of locals, food supply for them is very acute.
A Malaysian Humanitarian Centre (MHC) spokesman, Johan Ariff Ismail said most of the new refugees in temporary emplacements and impromptu sites were in dire need of food.
When briefing the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, who is now here in Cox's Bazar, he said most of the refugees who were without food were at impromptu camps they set up themselves.
"They are depending on humanitarian aid which is being boosted. Since, starting its operation, MHC could only distribute 3,000 packs of food worth RM100,800," he said.
The data issued by MHC here showed 212,343 refugees had entered Bangladesh before the military violence in the Rakhine state started on Aug 25. When the violence and mass killing by Myanmar soldiers took place, 535,854 refugees escaped into Bangladesh.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin, who is also the Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs) president, is here since yesterday to head a humanitarian mission involving non-government organisations (NGO) concerning the Rohingya refugees. — Bernama
