PETALING JAYA: The 24-year-old man arrested on Sunday night for assaulting a couple for kissing near an Islamic centre in Rome is not a Malaysian.
The Ansa news agency earlier reported that a Malaysian was responsible for the attack.
However, Italian authorities have confirmed with the Malaysian embassy in Rome that the man is from Mali.
"We received the confirmation on Wednesday morning (Italian time)," said the official.
The assailant shoved the woman before punching and kicking the man, Rome police said.
"You can't kiss here in front of the mosque," the unnamed man was alleged to have shouted at the couple before attacking them.
According to Ansa news agency, the assailant allegedly went for the two police officers at the scene. One of the officers was said to be bruised.
The assailant faces charges of assault and of resisting a public official.
Police are investigating "the extent of radicalisation" of the man, who is resident in Rome, according to the romatoday.italy website.
