KUALA LUMPUR: Two women were among eight suspected drug traffickers arrested in four separate raids in the federal capital, in connection with the seizure of an assortment of drugs worth about RM8.7 million on Wednesday.
The drugs comprised ecstasy pills weighing 67kg, syabu (36.3kg), cocaine (6.5kg) and six grammes of ketamine.
The suspects are aged between 19 and 34.
The Bukit Aman Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) and the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) carried out the raids between 5.15pm and 5.50pm.
Bukit Aman NCID deputy director, Datuk Kamarulzaman Mamat, said the inspection of four rented houses led to the discovery of the various types of drugs.
"We also seized six cars, RM4,972 and jewellery," he told a press conference, here today.
He said the syndicate's modus operandi involved storing the drugs meant for more than 400,000 users at rented homes before distribution to local markets, especially in the Klang Valley.
Kamarulzaman said initial investigations revealed the suspects did not have any criminal record.
The eight suspects have been remanded for a week, beginning Wednesday to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
In a related development, Kamarulzaman said 47,389 people were arrested for various drug offences between January this year and last Wednesday, and drugs worth RM65.47 million were seized. — Bernama
