Independent assessors confirm KLIA Aerotrain system is functioning as intended

An independent assessment confirms the KLIA Aerotrain is operating safely, with service disruptions being common in early operational phases.

SEPANG: Independent railway assessors have confirmed the KL International Airport (KLIA) Aerotrain system is operating as intended.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) stated the assessors found service disruptions since commissioning are common during the early phase of complex rail systems.

The disruptions do not pose a safety risk due to structured engineering controls and continuous monitoring.

During the implementation of the Comprehensive Action Plan (CAP), Aerotrain operations have remained stable.

It recorded an Operational Service Availability of 100% in December 2025, up from 98.67% in July 2025.

The independent assessment identified two critical systems influencing train reliability and performance.

These are the power supply system and the rolling stock.

For the power supply system, the overall design and protection systems were found adequate and operating as intended.

Areas like installation quality and power rail monitoring were identified for continued focus to strengthen long-term reliability.

For the rolling stock, particular attention was placed on the current collector device.

This device influences traction continuity and service stability due to its interaction with the power rail.

MAHB stated the CAP has been implemented through coordinated workstreams covering inspection, testing, and trial operations.

Inspection and rectification activities across the Aerotrain system have been completed.

The programme is now at the final milestone to close out remaining rectification actions.

During the CAP period, engineering hours were initially scheduled from 9 pm to 7 am.

These hours were later shortened to 11 pm to 7 am to accommodate festive and school holiday peak periods.

MAHB said it will continue to implement the remaining CAP measures in a coordinated manner.

This effort is supported by ongoing monitoring and independent oversight to strengthen system reliability.

The goal is to ensure consistent Aerotrain operations at KLIA.

MAHB had previously announced two independent assessors, Alstom and IJMC-PESTECH, were reviewing the system.

Their consolidated reports were expected by mid-January 2026.
