PETALING JAYA: The Taiwan Expo in Malaysia 2021 Online debuted yesterday, exhibiting products and technologies from 160 Taiwanese companies.

The expo has garnered the attention of more than 200 Malaysian businesses with more than 1,000 registrations for online business matchings.

Prominent buyers at the expo include Big Pharmacy Healthcare Sdn Bhd, one of the top three pharmacy chain stores in Malaysia; Intercon Group, the leading FMCG distributor of halal food; and myNews.com, a retail convenience store.

Taiwan External Trade Development Council (Taitra) chairman James CF Huang, Taiwan Bureau of Foreign Trade director general Cynthia Kiang, Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) deputy CEO Sharimahton Mat Saleh, and Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre, Taipei president Sharon Ho Swee Peng sat down for a “kopi” session to discuss the future of Taiwan-Malaysian cooperation.

Huang said the global supply chain has to be restructured due to the pandemic and the China-US trade war.

“Malaysia’s role as a strong base electronic machinery and semiconductor manufacturing coupled with its key location as the manufacturing center of Southeast Asia makes it an important strategic ally. I hope that Taiwan Expo will generate greater economic benefits for bilateral trade relations between Taiwan and Malaysia,“ he said.

Huang interacted with virtual characters in the 3D exhibition hall, the highlight of this year’s Taiwan Expo, to present participants a novel experience different from previous exhibitions.

The new 3D online exhibition hall is designed to give visitors an experience akin to physically present at the exhibition. Interested buyers only need to register as a member of the Taitra to access the virtual exhibition hall and its features, similar to visiting an actual event.

Besides the one-to-one online business matching sessions during the three-day exhibition period, the exhibition will continue be live for one month, allowing those unable to attend during the exhibition to peruse it.
