A Malaysian netizen has sparked conversation online after taking to Threads to compare how sick leave is handled in Malaysia versus the UK and Australia.
In the Threads post, she explained that in the UK and Australia, employees can often self-declare sick leave for a few days without needing to visit a doctor.
“No doctor needed, boss just trusts you.”
She then compared to how stark things are in Malaysia, where even for a one-day fever, Malaysians have to wake up early despite feeling extremely unwell and go to the clinic shivering.
“Then only…you’re ‘officially’ allowed to rest. Sad but true.”
The post drew mixed responses from netizens.
“100% agreed. Sometimes we even wait until the next morning after Subuh to go to the clinic because the rates are slightly cheaper compared to going at night, just to get an MC to prove that we’re not well.”
Some pointed out that not all companies operate the same way. One user said their workplace even allows staff to take sick leave as a “mental health day”, and employees do not need to submit an MC if they are genuinely unwell.
Others agreed that the system relies heavily on trust, and said it may not work in Malaysia due to the risk of abuse.
