Parent backs six-year-olds in Standard One, raises concerns

M’sian parent supports six-year-olds entering Year One but questions facilities and teacher readiness.

YESTERDAY, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced three major education reforms, one of them involving the admission of six-year-olds into Standard One effective in 2027.

Following the announcement, many Malaysian parents have shared their concerns over the move, fearing lack of facilities and preparation.

One parent shared his support for the move, drawing from his child’s learning experience in the Netherlands.

According to his Threads post, he explained that his child’s learning there did not focus heavily on academics, but rather followed the philosophy that “playing is learning”, as emphasised by the child’s Dutch teachers. He added that each classroom had around 20 students, with one class teacher assigned.

Despite supporting the move, he raised concerns about the reform being implemented in a short time frame, describing it as “experimental”.

The parent also questioned whether the government would be able to prepare adequate facilities and ensure that teachers are properly trained and up to date with the latest educational syllabus in time for the reform.

“Are the facilities ready? Are there enough teachers? Are the teachers equipped with the latest learning syllabus?” he asked in his post.

Netizens largely disagreed with his views, pointing out that the education systems in both countries differ greatly, while also highlighting how a lack of facilities, especially in Malaysia, could hinder students’ learning progress.

Many users noted that classrooms in Malaysia typically have more than 30 students, compared to the aforementioned Dutch classroom.

“My child, who is in Year One, has 11 classrooms in their school, and each class has around 40 to 45 students,” one user said.

“Malaysian school facilities still have a long way to go in catering to children’s developmental needs. Even though the syllabus may become more flexible by 2027, limited facilities cannot fully support higher-quality outcomes,” another remarked.
