“Whoever’s cheaper gets support”: RM5.90 Mixue cakes ignite fight over prices and quality

A social media post on Mixue’s affordable cakes sparks debate over local traders, pricing, quality, and consumer choices.

A post by @joeboyking93 on X has triggered a debate online after claiming that Mixue’s cake being cheap can affect local traders.

“They’ve already dominated the drinks market. Now they’re moving into desserts and cakes too,” he wrote.

The post argued that local cake sellers are being undercut, adding: “I feel sorry for our local traders who open shops and take cake orders like this — everything gets swept up by them.”

In a follow-up, he also criticised that local pricing and framed Mixue as an alternative for lower-income consumers.

“And then locals sell at ridiculously high prices. In the end, at least there’s an alternative for people instead of buying overpriced cakes,” he said, adding that affordable cakes allow families to gather in “air-conditioned spaces”.

However, some users pushed back against blaming Mixue and changing the narrative.

@camancher2012 commented, “Always blaming others. Try not selling so expensively — if you want sales, don’t overprice. It’s up to buyers to choose whether they want cheaper or more expensive products.”

Others questioned quality. @JungshinChingu claimed, “They only use basic ingredients. Not premium ones either,” while @wakbell stated, “Confirmed — NOT TASTY.”

Concerns over safety were also raised, with @man_fbm asking, “What ingredients are they using? Is it safe? Or will it cause health problems in the future?”

Several commenters openly supported Mixue on their decision over the price alone.

“Support Mixue. Whoever’s cheaper gets our support,” said @TonsilBasher while @Pisangpanaz argued the competition could force change, “This actually pushes our traders to sell cheaper too.”

This, in turn, …. criticism @parisrichieee wrote, “Serves those ‘most-local-of-locals’ right — joining cake events and selling even a single slice at the price of a cow.” Similarly, @BangtanMyBangt1 criticised online promotion tactics, saying, “These affiliates should at least have the decency not to rage-bait.”

The discussion highlights a divide between price, quality, and responsibility, with Mixue positioned by some as a solution and by others as a problem.
