Harry Potter series gets season two renewal before debut
HBO Max has renewed its upcoming original Harry Potter series for a second season ahead of its first season premiere in Christmas 2026.
The first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will stream exclusively on HBO Max. Season two is scheduled to begin production this Q3.
Jon Brown, who wrote on season one, has been promoted to co-showrunner for the second season. His previous credits include HBO’s Succession and The Franchise.
“I’ve loved working with Brown from the very first day we met on Succession through to these recent times together on Harry Potter. Not only do I have huge admiration for his writing, but he’s also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person. We are lucky to have him,” showrunner Francesca Gardiner said.
“I’m incredibly excited to be collaborating with Francesca as co-showrunner. It has been a joy to write on Philosopher’s Stone and I’d like to thank Francesca and HBO for putting their faith in me to continue this remarkable journey,” said Brown.
The series follows Harry Potter, who grows up being told by his Aunt Petunia that he is nothing special. On his 11th birthday, a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry introduces him to a world of magic, friendship and danger as he is forced to confront an enemy from his past.
The series is written and executive produced by Gardiner. Mark Mylod serves as executive producer and directed multiple episodes. It is produced for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros Television.
J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV also serve as executive producers alongside David Heyman of Heyday Films.
