GEORGE TOWN: A Myanmar factory worker was killed after she was knocked down by a car driven by a 19-year-old Malaysian college student here today.

Ei Ei Phyo, who worked at the Pen Apparel factory in Bayan Lepas, was crossing Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah expressway near the Pesta Pulau Pinang site in Sungai Nibong when she was knocked down.

The 25-year-old died at the scene while the driver suffered multiple fractures to his left hand during the accident at about midnight.

A post mortem conducted by Dr Zufar Ismail Zeid revealed that she died due to severe cervical and chest injuries from the road accident.

Northeast district police head Asst Comm Soffian Santong said that the driver underwent a blood test to determine if he was intoxicated during the time of the mishap. The police have classified the case as reckless driving for now.

In another development in Langkawi, the body of 81-year-old Australian David John was found by a boat crew near the ferry terminal in Kuah.

In the 11.20pm incident on Saturday, John was believed to have drowned after his small boat had overturned near the ferry terminal here.

Langkawi district police head Supt Mohd Igbal Ibrahim said a post mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of death.
