IPOH: An estimated 46,744 self-employed persons have registered for and are contributing to the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SESSS), since it was introduced on June 1, 2017 until Feb 7.

Social Security Organisation (Socso) Benefits Division head Mohamad Fauzi Jaafar said among the sectors with the highest number of contributors was the passenger transport sector which recorded 43,000 self-employed individuals nationwide.

“Meanwhile, the second highest was the support services sector of 1,266 contributors while the transport of goods and food sector recorded 330 contributors to date.

“We hope more self-employed individuals contribute under the scheme to be protected in the event of a disaster in their line of work including occupational illnesses and workplace accidents,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after a briefing and dialogue session on the Self Employment Scheme to the hawkers’ associations in Perak at the Industrial Training Institute here, today.

Since Jan 1 this year, Socso has expanded its SESSS to 19 informal sectors including agriculture, livestock breeding, forestry, fisheries, manufacturing, construction, online business and data processing. - Bernama
