GEORGE TOWN: The plan to build two hotels on Penang Hill has raised concerns among residents here on the possibility of another landslide.
Several Penangites who live in the vicinity said they were concerned about the environmental repercussions of the two projects.
Lee Geok Lan told theSun that during the rainy season last week, mud water flowed down from the hilltop, adding that a construction project on the hilltop would worsen the situation.
Another Penigite, T. Vejarani said the construction work would give rise to pollution in the area, causing discomfort to residents in the neighbourhood.
She said the green lung on the hill would also be affected.
In a Facebook posting, Penang Hill Watch co-founder Rexy Prakash Chacko also criticised the state’s plan to proceed with the development.
“Penang Hill has always been and will always be etched in our hearts,“ he stressed while urging the state government to reconsider the development plan.
Last Friday, members of civil society organisations staged a protest outside the State Assembly building to protest the hilltop project.
Meanwhile, Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai said the proposed construction must adhere to guidelines stipulated by the city council.
He also stressed that public amenities on Penang Hill such as the food court and toilets need to be upgraded.
