KULAI: The reopening of the Johor Zoo scheduled for this month has been postponed to August due to unexpected upgrade works.
State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor (pix) said the additional works costing RM1.1 million caused the delay.
“The consultants and contractors faced three unexpected technical issues several months ago, resulting in a longer completion time,“ he said after visiting several houseowners afftected by water supply disruptions in Felda Bukit Permai here today.
The problem involves building separate sewage pipes for each animal enclosure, fixing damaged pool walls and updating old plumbing and electrical systems.
On Feb 12, the state government announced that the Johor Zoo ticket prices will be maintained as the lowest in Malaysia when it reopens in April, following the upgrade works.
The Johor Zoo, located in the heart of Johor Bahru, was established in 1928 and is the country’s oldest zoo, spanning 12.5 hectares and housing over 100 animal species.
In another development, Mohd Jafni, the Bukit Permai assemblyman, called on the state water operator, Ranhill SAJ Sdn Bhd, to enhance its customer service, particularly during festive periods when water supply interruptions are frequent.
He noted the company’s failure to provide prior notice of water disruptions, particularly in residential areas like Felda Bukit Permai, including on the first day of Aidilfitri last Wednesday.
“I speak for the residents, and we’re very disappointed. Two weeks ago, Ranhill SAJ assured us they had a plan to avoid water disruptions during Aidifitri but it still occurred,” he said.
Meanwhile, Felda Bukit Permai village chief Zakaria Khalid, 60, expressed disappointment over the area’s long-standing water supply problem, which has persisted for over 50 years, causing residents to grow accustomed to it.
“What’s most upsetting was no prior notice was given. Residents and their families returning home faced difficulties making preparation and some even had to delay cooking for the festive meal,‘ he said.
