Bahasa Melayu mastery must remain priority before foreign languages

DBP stresses Bahasa Melayu must not be neglected as it reflects intellect, values and civilisation while learning other languages.

KOTA BHARU: The Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka has emphasised that mastering Bahasa Melayu must remain a priority for all Malaysians before acquiring proficiency in other foreign languages.

Its Board of Governors member Dr Ahmad Fadhlil Mohamad Pakarul Razy stated that strengthening the national language does not mean rejecting the importance of foreign languages.

He explained this approach ensures the younger generation has a strong foundation in Bahasa Melayu as part of their identity and character.

“We must continue efforts to strengthen Bahasa Melayu, but at the same time, there is nothing wrong with learning other languages,” he told reporters after officiating the Karnival Lestari Bahasa 2025.

He added that foreign languages remain important for acquiring knowledge and meeting employment needs.

“However, Bahasa Melayu must never be neglected under any circumstances,” he stressed.

Dr Ahmad Fadhlil described Bahasa Melayu as not merely a communication tool but a reflection of intellect, values and civilisation.

He said the carnival organisation is timely amid globalisation and digitalisation changing how people interact and think.

Therefore, he added that efforts to strengthen Bahasa Melayu must continue to ensure it remains a language of knowledge, the economy and technology.

The carnival was held in conjunction with the Kelantan-level National Language Month celebration. – Bernama
