Malaysia’s Medical Assistance Fund has helped 84,500 patients with RM793.7 million in approved aid since 2005, covering various medical disciplines.
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 84,500 patients have received assistance from the Medical Assistance Fund since 2005.
Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan revealed the approved aid amounts to RM793.7 million over this period.
This includes more than 3,800 approved applications valued at RM56.2 million as of last month.
“The fund aims to assist the underprivileged in partially or fully financing treatment costs, medical equipment, rehabilitation devices and medicines,” he said.
He noted this assistance is subject to certain conditions.
Amir Hamzah spoke during the committee-level debate on the Supply Bill 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat.
Covered medical disciplines include cardiology, orthopaedics, respiratory medicine, surgery and rehabilitation.
On medical and health insurance and takaful policies, he highlighted new basic products offer sustainable alternatives.
Policyholders won’t need to depend on temporary interim measures with these products.
“This basic MHIT product will provide financial protection against hospitalisation costs,” he said.
It also offers higher transparency levels for all parties involved.
The government will introduce the basic MHIT product structure as a standalone offering.
Amir Hamzah confirmed these products won’t link to investment performance.
Bank Negara Malaysia is reviewing medical plans sold as riders to investment-linked policies.
