APEC leaders commend Malaysia’s leadership after ASEAN summit

APEC leaders praised Malaysia’s successful hosting of the ASEAN summit, highlighting the country’s leadership capabilities, says PM Anwar.

GYEONGJU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that congratulatory messages from Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders affirm Malaysia’s capacity for wise and determined leadership.

He received these commendations during an informal gathering with fellow leaders at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting sidelines.

Anwar mentioned having a casual meeting where they exchanged views on current regional issues in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

They discussed strengthening more equitable and resilient economic cooperation among member economies.

Earlier, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung welcomed Anwar and other APEC economic leaders with a formal greeting and group photo session.

Notable attendees included Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, and Chilean President Gabriel Boric.

Malaysia stands among APEC’s twelve founding members alongside Australia, Brunei, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea.

Other founding economies include New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and the United States.

APEC represents 21 economies with nearly three billion people across the Asia-Pacific region.

The forum accounts for 62% of global gross domestic product and 48% of world trade as of 2021. – Bernama
