Butterworth Station upgrade to enhance northern Malaysia rail travel

RM30 million upgrade for Butterworth Station will improve commuter experience and integrate rail with ferry and bus services in northern Peninsula.

BUTTERWORTH: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad’s Butterworth Station will undergo significant upgrades to enhance passenger comfort and integration with other transport modes.

The RM30 million initiative announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke aims to establish Penang Sentral as a primary transport hub for northern Peninsula Malaysia.

KTMB’s chief technical officer Ahmad Nizam Mohamed Amin said the station serves as a strategic gateway connecting national commuters to Penang through multiple transport options.

“We welcome the minister’s announcement regarding the RM30 million allocation for upgrading Butterworth Station,” he said in a statement.

“This upgrade will enhance the profile of northern rail services and solidify Penang’s status as a leading state in developing a modern, sustainable mobility hub.”

Butterworth Station recorded 1.2 million passengers for the Komuter Utara service and 497,726 passengers for the Electric Train Service as of October.

The upgrade will feature more user-friendly passenger facilities and integrated ticketing systems.

It will also include improved waiting areas and enhanced facilities for persons with disabilities.

The station serves as the main connecting hub between ETS, Komuter Utara, freight trains, ferry services and nearby bus terminals.

KTMB introduced the Ruby Lounge at Butterworth Station in June as an exclusive waiting area with premium facilities for ETS passengers.

“The upgrade reflects our shared commitment to establishing rail as the backbone of the nation’s future mobility system,” Ahmad Nizam added.

KTMB operates Malaysia’s national rail service across a 1,655-kilometre network serving 84 stations throughout Peninsular Malaysia.

The company will collaborate with the Ministry of Transport, Penang government and related agencies for smooth project implementation. – Bernama
