Arrest warrants issued for two immigration officers in Johor after they failed to appear in court to face bribery charges.
JOHOR BAHRU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has obtained arrest warrants for two Immigration officers who failed to appear in court to face corruption charges.
Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail issued the warrants after the prosecution requested them.
The officers’ lawyer had previously informed the court that both clients were on sick leave.
He cited a slipped disc for one officer and a thyroid problem for the other.
The court had subsequently set a new date for the charges to be read before February 25.
Both accused were originally scheduled to be charged on January 21.
They failed to appear then, leading to the date being rescheduled to February 5.
The officers are accused of receiving bribes on September 22, 2024.
The alleged offence took place at the Pasir Gudang Terminal Immigration Office in Johor.
The bribe was reportedly an inducement to avoid a thorough inspection of an Indonesian national’s travel documents.
Johor MACC director Hairuzam Mohmad Amin@Hamim confirmed the warrants when contacted.
He stated the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.
The offence is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act.
