Man charged with murdering grandmother, injuring great-grandmother in Kuala Ketil

A 21-year-old man faces murder and attempted murder charges for allegedly attacking his grandmother and great-grandmother with a machete in Kuala Ketil, Baling

SUNGAI PETANI: A 21-year-old man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with murdering his grandmother and attempting to murder his great-grandmother.

Muhammad Farhan Zulkefli did not enter a plea after the charges were read before Magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri.

The first charge, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, accuses him of murdering 65-year-old Halimah Hashim.

The alleged murder occurred between 6.40 pm and 6.53 pm on December 16 at a house in Kampung Baru Bakai, Kuala Ketil, Baling.

He faces the death penalty or 30 to 40 years’ imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane if convicted.

Muhammad Farhan is also charged with causing injury to his 80-year-old great-grandmother, Mariyam Ariffin, using a machete.

The second charge was framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

It carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a fine, or up to 20 years if the act causes injury.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Hazwani Md Noor informed the court the accused is receiving psychiatric treatment.

She applied for a court order under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The court allowed the application to obtain a psychiatric report from Bahagia Ulu Kinta Hospital in Perak.

The case has been set for mention on January 6 next year to receive the report.
