Former PM Najib Razak appeals High Court dismissal of his judicial review over an alleged house arrest addendum, continuing his prison sentence.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has filed an appeal against a High Court ruling on his house arrest application.
His lawyer, Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee, confirmed a notice of appeal was filed at the Court of Appeal on Dec 24.
The appeal challenges the dismissal of Najib’s judicial review over an alleged addendum order for house arrest.
High Court judge Alice Loke Yee Ching rejected the application on Dec 22.
She found the alleged addendum was not deliberated during the Pardons Board meeting on Jan 29, 2024.
Following this decision, Najib must continue serving his sentence at Kajang Prison.
He has been imprisoned since Aug 23, 2022, after being convicted of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd.
The High Court initially sentenced him to 12 years’ imprisonment and a RM210 million fine.
This decision was upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court.
His petition for a royal pardon resulted in the Pardons Board halving his prison sentence to six years.
The board also reduced his fine to RM50 million.
Last Friday, the High Court sentenced him to 15 years in jail for charges linked to 1MDB.
Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah also imposed a total fine of RM11.4 billion.
He found Najib guilty on four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering.
The sentence involves RM2.3 billion in funds linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
Justice Sequerah ruled the sentence will take effect after Najib completes his current six-year term.
This prison term for the SRC case ends on Aug 23, 2028.
Muhammad Farhan said an appeal related to Najib’s 1MDB case would also be filed soon.
The defence is awaiting the court’s official order for verification before proceeding.
