A court heard that a former political secretary demanded a RM19 million lump sum payment from a company after it secured a RM381 million police maintenance contract.
KUALA LUMPUR: A former political secretary to an ex-home minister demanded a RM19 million ‘lump sum’ payment from a company that won a police contract.
Nexuscorpgroup Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Azman Kamaruddin testified that his managing director, Wan Azhar Mohamed Yusof, informed him of the demand.
The demand was for a 5% cut of a RM381 million Royal Malaysia Police tender for maintenance and spare parts.
Azman, 45, said Wan Azhar told him the payment to Sayed Amir Muzzakkir Al Sayed Mohamad was due because the company had won the tender.
The eighth prosecution witness said Wan Azhar initially stated the accused wanted the payment as a lump sum three to four months after the Letter of Acceptance.
“Wan Azhar refused to pay it all at once, saying NSB lacked the funds,” Azman testified.
“He instead proposed paying in stages.”
Azman said he believed Sayed Amir Muzzakkir helped win the tender due to his position as the home minister’s political secretary.
“Wan Azhar only told me payments had been made,” he added.
“I don’t know the amounts. I confirm that only Wan Azhar signed cheques or approved online transfers to him.”
Sayed Amir Muzzakkir, 43, faces three corruption charges involving RM350,000.
He was charged with two counts of accepting RM350,000 in bribes from Wan Azhar as a reward for helping secure the tender.
A third charge alleges he solicited RM350,000 from the same person for the same purpose.
The offences are said to have occurred in Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam in December 2020.
He was charged under the MACC Act 2009, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ jail and a fine.
The trial before Judge Rosli Ahmad resumes tomorrow.
