Bukit Aman takes over investigation into UTM cadet officer’s death

The investigation into the death of UTM cadet officer Syamsul Haris has been transferred to Bukit Aman’s Classified Crime Investigation Unit.

JOHOR BAHRU: The investigation into the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officer Training Unit (PALAPES) cadet officer Syamsul Haris Shamsudin has been taken over by federal police headquarters Bukit Aman.

Johor police chief CP Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad confirmed the case is now under the Classified Crime Investigation Unit of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department.

“In terms of the investigation process and next steps, I cannot provide complete details because this matter is under the responsibility of Bukit Aman,” he said at a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters.

The transfer follows a directive from the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) to reclassify the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The AGC made the decision after reviewing the results of the initial police investigation into the 22-year-old’s death.

Syamsul Haris died at Kota Tinggi Hospital on July 28 after undergoing training at the Army Combat Training Centre in Ulu Tiram.

His case was initially classified as a sudden death.

The Shah Alam High Court later granted his family’s application for a second autopsy, which was performed at Kuala Lumpur Hospital on August 30.

In a separate statement, UTM said it noted the AGC’s decision and pledged full cooperation with police and the Malaysian Armed Forces.

“UTM always adheres to the principles of transparency and the rule of law, and leaves it entirely to the authorities to complete the investigation to ensure justice is served,” the university stated. – Bernama
