Kedah JPJ’s Ops Perang inspected nearly 14,000 commercial vehicles, issuing 4,513 summonses and seizing three vehicles for serious overloading offences.
BALING: The Road Transport Department issued 4,513 summonses after inspecting 13,902 commercial vehicles in a northern zone operation.
Kedah JPJ director Stien Van Lutam said the integrated Ops Perang, which runs until December 31, is a declaration of war against irresponsible operators.
He said the operation aims to curb non-compliance, particularly overloading offences that endanger road users and damage infrastructure.
The operation involved Kedah, Penang and Perlis and was carried out in phases from mid-November to December 21.
Van Lutam said 60 enforcement officers were deployed in each phase for mobile patrols and static checks at strategic locations.
Of the summonses issued, 45 were for overloading, including three cases exceeding 50% of the permitted limit.
Such severe cases will be prosecuted under Section 80 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010.
“This provides for heavy penalties, including vehicle forfeiture and action against licences, permits and vehicle owners,” he said.
Three vehicles have been forfeited during the operation so far, with one seized in Penang and two in Kedah.
Overall, six vehicles have been forfeited in Kedah from June to December this year.
Van Lutam urged commercial vehicle drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to comply with all regulations.
Meanwhile, summons collections in Kedah from the start of the year to date totalled RM23.4 million.
Of this, RM20.05 million was collected through compounds and RM3.35 million via court proceedings.
