Police confirm a viral video shows an 11-year-old tahfiz student being caned by a warden in Kulim, Kedah, with the case now under Section 324 of the Penal Code
ALOR SETAR: Police have confirmed the location of an incident shown in a viral video where a tahfiz student was caned.
Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said the event occurred at a maahad tahfiz in Sungai Kob, near Kulim, on September 29.
It involved an 11-year-old male student who was caned by a man believed to be the school warden.
“The incident at about 2 am occurred when a man thought to be the warden of the maahad tahfiz caned the student for disturbing others who were studying,” Adzli said.
The student, from Padang Serai, had only been enrolled at the school for about seven months.
His parents discovered bruises on his body when they picked him up and subsequently filed a police report on October 3.
The case was initially investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
Police have recorded a statement from the 26-year-old male warden but have not made an arrest.
Investigators later obtained closed-circuit television footage of the incident.
That evidence was sent to the public prosecutor’s office on December 18 as police await further instructions.
“The investigation papers will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office for a proposed charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code,” Adzli said.
Section 324 pertains to the offence of intentionally causing injury using a weapon or dangerous object.
A 48-second video of the caning had gone viral on social media earlier.
It showed the male student wincing in pain as he was struck in a dormitory room in front of other students.
