Police in Bera arrested a 54-year-old man and seized 112 units of high-value fireworks worth RM400,000 stored without a valid licence.

BERA: Police have arrested a man and seized 112 units of fireworks worth an estimated RM400,000 in a raid on a building in Triang.

Bera district police chief Supt Zulkiflee Nazir said the raid was conducted based on intelligence regarding illegal fireworks sales.

Police found a 54-year-old man believed to be the owner and caretaker of the fireworks stored in the building.

A total of 112 units of fireworks, believed to be imported from China and stored without a valid licence, were confiscated.

Zulkiflee said preliminary investigations indicated the seized fireworks were of high value and rarely seen in local markets.

This suggests the potential buyers were individuals with high income.

The suspect has been remanded for three days and the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

Zulkiflee also revealed that police have approved about 30 licences for fireworks sales for the festive season.

He stressed that the recent seizure did not involve any legal licence holders.

“Each licence application will be assessed in terms of location suitability, safety and distance from residences,” he said.

Premises that do not meet these requirements will not be approved.
