MCMC records statement from woman over fake diesel supply news

MCMC records a woman’s statement in a probe into fake news about diesel supply to the Philippines, seizing a phone and SIM card in the process

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today recorded the statement of an individual suspected of spreading fake news regarding claims of diesel fuel supply to the Philippines.

It said the woman, accompanied by her lawyer, had appeared at its headquarters in Cyberjaya to have her statement recorded.

“MCMC also seized a mobile phone and a SIM card suspected of being used to upload the content, to assist in the investigation.

“This action was taken under Section 248 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” it said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction, it said.

MCMC stressed that it takes seriously any misuse of social media platforms and digital channels to spread false information that could mislead the public.

“Firm enforcement action will be taken against any party found to have violated the law and undermined public order,” it added.
