Police hunt for man driving against traffic, hitting two vehicles on NSE

Acting Rembau district police chief DSP Azmi Ali said the incident occurred after the police ordered the 30-year-old driver to stop following a check that found the road tax and insurance for the Volkswagen Passat vehicle had expired.

REMBAU: Police are on the hunt for a man who fled after allegedly driving recklessly and against the flow of traffic before colliding with two other vehicles while trying to evade police arrest at Kilometre 242 of the North-South Expressway (NSE) northbound, early this morning.

Acting Rembau district police chief DSP Azmi Ali said the incident occurred after the police ordered the 30-year-old driver to stop following a check that found the road tax and insurance for the Volkswagen Passat vehicle had expired.

He said, however, the man did not stop and instead accelerated, driving dangerously in a zig-zag manner before going against the flow of traffic.

The man then collided with a Proton Saga and a Toyota Yaris before abandoning his vehicle on the side of the highway and fleeing to a nearby palm oil plantation.

“Further investigation in the car found a wallet believed to belong to the man from Selangor, who did not have a driving licence and had various past criminal records related to crime and drugs,” he said to Bernama here.

Azmi said that efforts to track down the man are being actively carried out, including assistance from the K9 unit and the Criminal Investigation Department of the Negeri Sembilan police contingent headquarters, and the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In another development, Jempol district police chief Supt Norhisham Mustapar said a 44-year-old male motorcyclist died after he was believed to have been hit by a Proton Wira car in a hit-and-run incident on Jalan Ladang Kok Foh, Jempol on June 24.

He said that in the incident around 5 pm, the victim suffered a broken right leg after the driver of the car involved was believed to have fled the scene.

He said that as a result of intelligence work, the police tracked down and arrested a 32-year-old Pakistani man in the Felda Palong 10 area on June 26 at around noon, and seized a Proton Wira believed to have been involved in the incident to assist in the investigation.

The suspect was then remanded for four days to assist in further investigations before being charged at the Bahau Magistrate’s Court on June 30 under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 after the investigation was completed.
