KUALA TERENGGANU: The East Coast Rail Link project has suffered losses of RM2.9 million from 38 cable and component theft incidents in Terengganu and Pahang between January and September this year.
Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak confirmed the company and police have implemented several security measures to combat the thefts.
These measures include the installation of 116 closed-circuit television cameras and the hiring of 67 security guards.
He stated that the plan specifically focuses on monitoring areas frequently targeted by thieves.
“So far, we have recorded incidents in Terengganu and Pahang, so it’s not confined to one location,” he told reporters after opening the ECRL Subcontractor Work Package G1 and G2 Bumiputera Draw Ceremony for Terengganu at Wisma Darul Iman.
Darwis highlighted the excellent cooperation received from all involved states to conduct more frequent engagements on the issue.
“This is a continuous effort, and we want all parties to take this issue seriously, as it could affect the opening of ECRL operations if it persists,” he added.
Meanwhile, Darwis reported that the ECRL project in Terengganu has achieved 93.55% progress to date.
He confirmed that the overall ECRL project has reached 88.08% completion nationwide.
“This shows that we are on the right track to fully complete the project by December 2026 and begin operations in January 2027,” he said. – Bernama
