Four men were rescued from a flooded vehicle in Niah, Sarawak, as 375 residents evacuated from two longhouses due to rising floodwaters.
MIRI: Four men were rescued after their four-wheel drive vehicle became trapped in floodwaters along Jalan Penerangan in Sepupok, Niah, this morning.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre received a distress call at 9.09 am and dispatched a team of five firefighters from the Batu Niah station.
Senior Fire Officer I Awang Azwan led the team to the scene, where they found the men, aged 26 to 44, stranded on the roof of their vehicle.
The group, comprising three locals and one Indonesian national, was surrounded by fast-moving floodwaters.
Firefighters successfully evacuated all four individuals to the safety of the Simpang Sepupok Bridge using a department boat.
In a separate incident, 375 residents from two longhouses in the same area were evacuated early this morning due to flooding.
The fire department received a call at 12.30 am and dispatched six firefighters led by Senior Fire Officer I Jefffery Majin.
The team confirmed that both Aron and Lumpoh longhouses in Sepupok were inundated with floodwater.
A total of 119 residents from Lumpoh House and 256 from Aron House were safely evacuated from their homes.
All evacuees were relocated to stay with relatives as floodwaters continued to rise in the area.
