The government is drafting national guidelines for disability-friendly facilities in all mosques and surau, aiming to improve accessibility and inclusion.
TANJONG MALIM: The government is drafting national guidelines to implement facilities friendly to persons with disabilities (PwDs) at all mosques and surau.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan said the guidelines will be implemented under the Action Plan of Religious Agencies for Muslim PwDs.
“This is one of our projects under Religious Affairs,” he told reporters after officiating a community programme here.
Zulkifli noted that several rounds of discussions with relevant stakeholders have already been held.
He highlighted recent initiatives, including training for imams and teachers in Braille.
The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has also sponsored e-Braille or e-Dot system laptops for use by PwDs.
Zulkifli acknowledged that some mosques nationwide already have PwD-friendly facilities.
He stated that further improvements are still needed despite this existing progress.
“There are mosques that, alhamdulillah, are already at the forefront, having received awards and implemented various programmes that are friendly to PwDs,” he said.
He cited examples like mosques providing sign language interpretation during sermons.
Zulkifli admitted that wider implementation may not be easy.
He emphasised it is achievable with determination, strong commitment and proper planning.
The minister also spoke at the ‘MADANI Membantu: Ziarah Kasih Rahmah (ZIKIR) 2026’ event.
He is also the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Malaysian Waqf Foundation (YWM).
Today’s programme was a strategic collaboration involving YWM and the Masjid Al-Hidayah Behrang committee.
Federal and state government agencies, strategic partners and volunteers also participated to enhance local community well-being.
Initiatives included distributing food boxes to 150 heads of households.
The programme also supported over 500 residents with free petrol and a complimentary breakfast.
Services offered included waqf counters, advisory services and free health screenings.
This enabled the public to access multiple services at a single location.
