MAHB to implement immediate measures at KLIA Terminal 1, including additional personnel, following baggage system disruption from power outage

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) will implement immediate measures at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1, including deploying additional personnel at arrival areas and other critical locations.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said MAHB has been instructed to submit weekly progress reports to the Ministry of Transport (MOT) for updates to the Cabinet.

The measures follow a disruption to the Baggage Handling System (BHS) at KLIA Terminal 1 caused by a power outage.

“At today’s Cabinet meeting, Transport Minister Antony Loke raised the issue of the baggage system disruption at KLIA, which was due to a power supply interruption.

“The disruption lasted about five hours and was fully resolved at 10.30 pm,” he said at a briefing on the global supply crisis and a post-Cabinet press conference here today.

Fahmi, who is also the MADANI government spokesperson, said the government views the incident seriously and stressed the need for immediate improvements to ensure smooth operations at the country’s main gateway.

On April 20, the MOT confirmed that the power outage had affected the BHS at KLIA Terminal 1.

The ministry said investigations have identified the root cause, and both immediate and long-term mitigation measures are being implemented to prevent a recurrence and strengthen system resilience.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Cabinet also discussed decisions from the National Economic Action Council (MTEN), particularly measures to conserve energy in the public sector.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had reminded all ministries, departments and agencies to prioritise energy-saving efforts.

“These include increasing online meetings, reducing physical meetings, limiting overseas travel, and prioritising the use of government premises for workshops and training programmes,” he said.

He added that the approach aligns with the government’s efforts to manage the impact of the global supply crisis prudently while ensuring public service delivery remains efficient and effective.
