Parliament to discuss smart lanes, lorry policy and trade agreement

Parliament to discuss smart lanes, lorry policy and trade agreement

KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of smart lanes, the enforcement of an overloaded lorry policy, and Malaysia’s status under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) are set for discussion in Parliament today.

According to the Order Paper, Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara) will ask the Works Minister about safety mechanisms for smart lanes to ensure they do not increase road accident risks.

Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) will question the Transport Minister on the impact of immediately enforcing the overloaded lorry policy from October 2025.

He will ask about its effect on the supply chain, logistics costs, and the cost of living, and why it was enforced without a reasonable transition period.

Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) will seek clarification from the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister on Malaysia’s position regarding the ART.

Hamzah wants to know Malaysia’s commitment compared to Southeast Asian countries that have not signed or ratified the agreement.

He also seeks the government’s justification for continuing with the ART despite some regional countries choosing not to.

Mohamad Shafizan Kepli (GPS-Batang Lupar) will question the Women, Family and Community Development Minister on welfare assistance eligibility reassessments.

He will ask about the criteria used by the Social Welfare Department to tighten the provision of monthly aid to existing recipients.

After the oral question session, the Dewan Rakyat will proceed with the debate on the Motion of Thanks for the Royal Address.

The current Dewan Rakyat sitting is scheduled to run for 20 days until March 3.
