Anwar urges end to language disputes, focus on children’s future

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim calls for an end to ethnic disputes over language, urging a focus on multilingual education to build a competitive future for Malaysia’s children.

BENTONG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysians to stop prolonged bickering over language issues.

He said the focus must shift to building a more competitive and united future for the nation’s children.

Anwar stated the government’s multilingual education approach does not undermine Bahasa Melayu as the national language.

He said it aims to strengthen unity and give all students equal opportunity to master multiple languages.

“Ability to speak more than one language is an important asset in facing global challenges,” he said.

He added this enhances the competitiveness of young generations without compromising national identity.

“We no longer want endless inter-ethnic disputes over language,” Anwar said.

“Our priority is to improve the quality of life and secure the future of our children.”

He said children must be ready to compete for work nationally, across Asia and globally.

“That is why language, science, mathematics, digital skills and artificial intelligence (AI) must be mastered from the early stages of schooling,” he said.

Anwar was speaking at a gathering with the Chinese community at SJKC Perting here.

He said improving education quality is a national agenda transcending ethnic differences.

All parties should focus on school improvements, teacher training and adequate facilities, he added.

Anwar announced the approval of RM13.5 million for improvement projects at SJKC Perting.

He said RM300,000 was approved immediately to allow preliminary work to begin.

The allocation is for an additional six-classroom block for special education and one preschool classroom.

It is part of preparations for the voluntary entry of five-year-olds into preschool next year.

“I hope all parties continue to support this school so it can serve as an example,” he said.
