Five trapped in bus-lorry collision on North-South Expressway

Five people trapped after express bus collides with lorry on North-South Expressway near Rawang early morning

PETALING JAYA: An early morning collision between an express bus and a lorry on the North-South Expressway, bear Rawang, has left five individuals trapped, prompting an emergency rescue operation.

The incident occurred at the 1-kilometer mark of the southbound expressway near Rawang, with authorities receiving the distress call at approximately 5.24am

Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, Assistant Director of Operations for the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, confirmed to New Straits Times that emergency responders from the Rawang station were immediately dispatched to the location.

Upon arrival, the rescue team discovered that the crash involved a passenger coach and a three-tonne lorry, resulting in multiple people being confined within the wreckage.

The express bus was transporting 42 individuals, including a pair of drivers. While 38 passengers managed to evacuate the vehicle without assistance, four remained stuck inside the damaged coach.

According to Ahmad Mukhlis, rescue teams have successfully freed three of the four trapped bus passengers, while efforts continue to extract the final victim. The lorry operator has also been removed from the vehicle by emergency personnel.

Specialized rescue equipment is currently being utilized in the ongoing operation to free the remaining person confined within the bus.

The Fire and Rescue Department continues to work at the scene as investigations into the cause of the collision are expected to follow.
