Gua Musang District Council identifies 12 new flood hotspots including Taman Agropolitan Rantau Manis, with extreme weather and drainage issues cited as causes.
GUA MUSANG: The Gua Musang District Council has identified 12 new flood hotspots in the district following changes in rainfall patterns and increased water flow from hilly areas.
Taman Agropolitan Rantau Manis and Felda Chiku are among the locations now considered high-risk areas for flooding.
MDGM President Mohd Roshdi Ismail said some of these areas had never experienced floods before but have become hotspots due to extreme weather changes.
“The main causes of flash floods include a drainage system that can no longer cope with heavy rainwater flow,” he told Bernama.
Rivers in these areas also require deepening work to improve water capacity during heavy rainfall.
Mohd Roshdi, who also chairs the District Disaster Operations Control Centre, said maintenance allocations are being prepared by relevant agencies.
Repair actions will be implemented in phases to address the flooding issues.
Technical agencies have been asked to cooperate with local residents through communal work to clear clogged drainage areas.
Resident Yah Omar, 43, said his house has been inundated five times since moving to the housing area in 2013.
“The flood last month was the worst,” he said, noting that heavy rain for just two hours causes water to enter his home.
Residents have been forced to evacuate to higher ground during severe flooding events.
Another resident, Che Rosri Che Rahim, 45, said water levels rise sharply when water surges down from nearby hills.
“The small stream in front of the house connects to the river from the top of the hill,” he explained.
He expressed hope that authorities can widen the river path to reduce flood risks in the community. – Bernama
