IWK implements urgent mitigation works after landslide damages sewerage infrastructure in Taman Saga
PETALING JAYA: Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) is conducting intensive mitigation efforts following a landslide incident that damaged sewerage infrastructure along a slope between Taman Bukit Permai and Taman Saga in Ampang Jaya, Selangor.
The sewerage services company received initial notification of the incident on January 18, (Sunday) at 10.50am and immediately mobilised response teams to the affected area.
The landslide affected approximately 10 meters of a 225mm vitrified clay sewer pipe and one manhole. The damaged infrastructure is located about 350 meters from Sewage Treatment Plant AMA040, which serves the residential areas in the vicinity.
IWK conducted a site visit on the day of the incident and has maintained daily monitoring since then to assess the evolving situation and implement necessary safety measures.
To prevent environmental impact and further site deterioration, IWK implemented several immediate mitigation measures. The company installed a temporary sewer connection to prevent sewage discharge into the surrounding area, ensuring public health and environmental protection remained priorities during the emergency response.
Emergency flow diversion systems were placed on standby to manage sewerage flow while repairs are conducted. Protective canvas was installed along the affected slope to prevent further collapse and stabilize the area. Additionally, cleaning operations were launched on affected drains to restore proper water flow and prevent flooding in nearby residential areas.
As of January 20, (Tuesday), IWK has successfully cleared the obstruction to drain flow, restoring normal water flow patterns in the area. However, cleaning works continue to ensure complete restoration of drainage systems.
Temporary flow diversion works connecting to the existing manhole are currently ongoing and was expected to be completed by yesterday. This temporary solution will allow sewerage services to continue functioning normally while permanent repairs are undertaken.
IWK has outlined a comprehensive plan for follow-up works to fully restore the affected infrastructure. These works include the reconstruction and realignment of the damaged sewer pipeline and manhole to ensure long-term stability and functionality.
Protective measures will be installed to prevent similar incidents in the future. CCTV inspection of surrounding sewer lines is being conducted to identify any additional vulnerabilities or damage that may not be immediately visible.
Remedial repair works will address the effects of the slope failure, while full reinstatement of the slope, road surface, and guardrail will restore the area to its original condition. These comprehensive measures demonstrate IWK’s commitment to not only repairing immediate damage but also preventing future incidents.
IWK has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public safety and minimizing environmental impact throughout the restoration process. The company is working closely with relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure all repair works are conducted promptly and responsibly.
Daily monitoring of site conditions continues, with IWK teams providing necessary support as the situation develops. The company has assured residents and stakeholders that all necessary resources have been allocated to complete the restoration works efficiently.
The affected area sits between Taman Bukit Permai and Taman Saga, two established residential neighborhoods in Ampang Jaya, Selangor. The landslide occurred along a slope where critical sewerage infrastructure serves these communities.
