Agriculture Ministry supports moving pig farms to 500-hectare Bukit Tagar site with modern systems.
PUTRAJAYA: The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) has expressed support for the Selangor state government’s plan to relocate pig farms to a 500-hectare site in Bukit Tagar.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, told reporters today that the ministry has no objection to the relocation, provided the project complies with environmental requirements.
He added that the move must adopt modern farming systems to prevent pollution.
“If it is implemented using modern systems and widespread pollution does not occur, the federal level, including KPKM, fully supports what Selangor is doing,” he said, emphasising that the initiative involves multiple operators and stakeholders.
Earlier this week, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government’s initiative aims to end traditional pig farming practices, which have long caused pollution from odour and water contamination.
He said the relocation seeks to centralise pig farms and implement modern, privately managed systems that are cleaner and more organised.
“As long as we do not close the area, the pollution generated by traditional, scattered farms will continue. Our goal from the start has been to shut down traditional farms that cause odour and water pollution and move towards modern farming managed by the private sector,” Amirudin said.
He added that the state government will hold detailed discussions with the farmers affected by the relocation.
Currently, there are 69 pig farmers in Tanjong Sepat, Kuala Langat.
